Ingrown Onychauxis Claw removeal
Onychauxis is a thickening of the claw associated with age, reduced exercise and grooming often occurring in older cats which can lead to paw pad trauma as the overgrown claw curls into the pad. This is a preventable situation with the regular care of a professional groomer. Here we have an example of how Fancy Felines can help if the claw has already penetrated the paw pad. First we assess the situation carefully to make certain that the paw is not already infected, in which case we will sometimes need to refer your cat to professional vet care if the situation is outside of our scope for care - usually this is not the case however and we can safely perform the removal without any pharmaceutical intervention in our on-site health care clinic. As seen in the 5 photos above we show step by step what we do. Photo 1 is the claw imbedded into the paw pad, the crusty raised pad is mostly scar tissue and dead pad encrusted around the claw. We do a long magnesium soak of the area to soften the pad, then we proceed to cut the claw just above the imbedded line as shown in photo 2. If the pad is nice and soft from the soak this allows the claw to easily come away from the pad shown in photo 3. There is some immediate bleeding of the area which we gently apply some pressure to with a cotton magnesium-soaked pad for a few minutes while softening the crusted area further in preparation for removal of the dead tissue. We then continue to gently remove the dead pad with warm magnesium until the wound is nice a clean as seen in photo 5. Photo 6 shows the tissue which has been removed and the claw. We like to keep the cat in clinic overnight to make sure that the wound isn't exposed to any unnecessary trauma and bacteria. This service is included in our Moderate Accommodation fees and generally only requires one night stay. This can be added additionally to any groom for $50.00 more and will include an extra nights accommodation.
